With a rich African heritage present in its culture, history and gastronomy, Rio de Janeiro was voted the Best National Afrotourism Destination during the 3rd edition of the Afrotourism Awards, held on Monday (14.04) in São Paulo. The announcement was made at the World Travel Market Latin America (WTM-LA) – one of the most important global events in the tourism sector. The award is promoted by the Guia Negro platform, which has the valorization of Afro-Brazilian roots as one of its strategic pillars.
The choice of Rio reinforces the city’s role in valuing Afro culture and strengthening tourism experiences linked to ancestry. Among the routes highlighted by the jury are Little Africa, in the port region, and the Madureira neighborhood – routes that rescue and celebrate the contribution of the black population in shaping Rio’s identity.
Another important recognition went to the Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (Muhcab), located in Gamboa. Inaugurated in 2021, the space was awarded Best Tourist Attraction in the segment and was described by the judges as a “place of resistance”, dedicated to the preservation, promotion and celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture, through exhibitions, talks and cultural activities.
The awards also recognized other efforts to boost Afrotourism in Brazil. São Luís (MA) was highlighted for its investments in the sector, receiving the title of Outstanding Black Guide. Tourism expert Thaís Rosa Pinheiro, founder of the Conectando Territórios agency and a consultant for the Ministry of Tourism, was voted the best professional in the segment.
BLACK ROUTES – The strengthening of Afrotourism is also reflected in public policies aimed at promoting Brazil internationally. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the Ministry of Racial Equality and other federal government bodies, launched the Black Routes Program.
The initiative aims to foster tourism experiences that value African ancestry in different territories – urban and rural – boosting opportunities for inclusion and protagonism for black populations. With a focus on the creative, circular and sustainable economy, the program also aims to strengthen Afro-Brazilian tourist destinations on the Tourism Map.
In addition, Rotas Negras includes actions aimed at educating and sensitizing tourists about Afro-Brazilian history and culture, training local communities in the management of their tourism products and confronting stereotypes, contributing to the self-esteem of the populations involved.
